In Bloomington, an essential component is expanding the economic base of educational institutions, major manufacturers and employers, start-up businesses and entrepreneurs and growing businesses that keep the community thriving.

As the voice of business within our community, the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce carefully monitors and proactively works with our community partners to ensure our area’s economy remains stable by making Bloomington a community that encourages and nurtures business growth. The focus on maintaining a diverse and vibrant business community has allowed Bloomington to enjoy one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state for the past few years. Bloomington has an unemployment rate of 4.8%, compared the national average of 6.9%.

Because Bloomington is home to Indiana University and the 40,000 students that reside in our community throughout the year, our city has always had a large percentage of small business and service-type businesses. The service and small business sector remain the bedrock of our community’s economy today as it did in years prior.

Like many other cities, there was a time when manufacturing jobs were abundant and accounted for a substantial amount of jobs in our area. Over the past five years, we have seen these jobs slowly leave the area giving way to new areas of business growth. Specifically, there has been a shift toward the life-sciences and hi-tech jobs through some of our major employers like Cook, Baxter, Mirwec Film, and BioConvergence, to name a few.

While the unpredictability of the economy remains, Bloomington is well poised to continue its history of economic growth.

Bloomington, Indiana is an impressive place to work and do business!

Whether you are a recent graduate or a workforce veteran, Bloomington has many options if you are looking to make Bloomington your home, start a career or make a transition into a new one.

If you are looking for a position or have an open position that you need to fill, we encourage you to utilize the Chamber’s new Job & Internship Board. Connect your needs and experience through the Chamber's Job & Internship Board.
